Everyone knows health care in America is expensive. The cost of prescription drugs is the one part of that expense the average person actually sees. Getting a new prescription from your doctor is like spinning a wheel to see how much money you’re going to lose. If you have insurance, will this medicine be covered? Which of your copays will apply? If you are uninsured, the stakes are even higher. While some common prescriptions only cost $4 at places like Walmart and Target pharmacies, most pharmaceuticals cost a lot more than that. And the patient / consumer doesn’t know how much until they go to fill the prescription.
Opaque Pricing
Prescription drug pricing is the opposite of transparent. While not quite as bad as trying to compare the costs of medical services, comparison shopping for prescriptions is time-consuming and messy. Different pharmacies may quote wildly different prices to fill the same prescription. And even at a single pharmacy, your price can be several times higher or lower depending on whether you know certain tricks to the system.
